Inside Ugra: Our founding story and philosophy

My story begins with a word: 'Ugro.'

In Bengali, it's often used to criticize someone for being too fierce or bold.

Growing up, I heard it frequently, always with the implication that I needed to tone myself down. My choices were too bold, especially when it came to footwear. I wasn't allowed to wear high heels until high school graduation—but I yearned to wear them.

In 2013, with my first paycheck, I bought a pair of high heels. I wore them everywhere—to work, parties, the airport, even the grocery store. At first, it was just because I loved how they made me feel. But soon, I noticed others taking notice too.

On my last day at a newsroom where I worked, my senior editor said something unforgettable: "We'll miss the sound of your heels!" My heels weren't just shoes anymore; they were distinct, announcing my arrival before I even entered a room.

Years later, I started designing my own heels, finding manufacturers, sourcing materials, and creating my perfect shoes. People noticed and often inquired about the brand—and that's when I knew there was something special about them.

I've been running in high heels for years now, and I know exactly what that perfect pair feels like and looks like.

This passion and expertise led to the founding of Ugra in 2024.
