The Kolhapuri: footprints across India’s everyday history

Born on dusty Deccan roads in the early 1900s, Kolhapuri chappals were cut from a single hide of buffalo leather, stitched never nailed, to stand up to stone tracks, heat and monsoon mud. 

Within a generation, the sandals moved from farms to palace courts; Kolhapur royals and theatre troupes ordered finer pairs with punched kudi borders. By mid-century, Bollywood stylists had turned them into the screen shorthand for a village hero, sending demand from Kolhapur bazaars to Delhi’s Chandni Chowk.

Everyday Indians adopted them for the same reason farmers had: durability. One pair could be resoled three times by the local mochi, making the chappal a quiet badge of reliability. In 2019 the Indian government sealed its status with a Geographical Indication tag, limiting the name “Kolhapuri” to eight districts across Maharashtra and Karnataka.

1. KEEP THEM DRY
If wet, blot gently and air dry away from heat.

2. DUST WEEKLY
Wipe with a soft cloth or brush to remove dirt.

3. CONDITION OCCASIONALLY
Use a small amount of leather conditioner to keep them supple.

4. HOLD THEIR SHAPE
Stuff the toes with packing paper provided when storing.

5. EMBRACE THE PATINA
